AI Writing Detection in Schools: What Students Should Actually Know

How the detectors actually decide
AI detectors do not read for meaning. They measure statistical patterns in the text, things like how predictable the word choices are, how uniform the sentence length is, and whether the writing follows patterns common to large language models. When the prose is unusually smooth or consistent, the score goes up. That is why edited or carefully structured human writing sometimes gets flagged.
This is also why the scores are probabilistic, not certain. A score of 70 percent AI does not mean 70 percent of the text was generated. It means the model thinks there is a high chance some of it was. Schools that treat the number as proof are misusing the tool, but some still do.

If you get flagged unfairly
A flag is an accusation, not a verdict. You have the right to ask how the result was generated and to show your drafts and notes. Stay calm and factual. Most faculty would rather resolve a misunderstanding than escalate it, especially when you can show dated drafts and an editing trail.
The bigger lesson is to write in a way you can defend. If you can reconstruct how a piece came together, with notes, drafts, and edits, you have nothing to fear from a detector. The students who get hurt are the ones who cannot explain their own work.
