How a Humanizer Actually Rewrites Your Sentences

Low perplexity means the model saw each next word coming — which is close to guaranteed when a language model wrote the text in the first place, since its whole job is picking the most probable next word, over and over, one token at a time.

Burstiness is the variation in that predictability across a passage — the way human writing swings between a short, blunt sentence and a long, winding one, between a plain word and an odd choice that a predictive model would never have reached for. Machine-generated text tends to sit at a flatter, steadier level. Not necessarily simple, just even in a way real writing rarely stays for more than a paragraph or two.

Put the two together and you get a fingerprint. Text that scores low on both, consistently, across many sentences in a row, is the pattern most detectors are trained to flag — and it's roughly the same pattern a human reader notices, even without naming it, as the reason a paragraph feels a little off.

The Loop Running Behind the Scenes

The statistical signal a detector reads is genuinely different in the output, because the sentences themselves are different — the perplexity and burstiness values shifted as a side effect of real rewriting, not as a disguise layered on top. A detector reading humanized text isn't being fooled any more than it's being fooled by a human writer who happens to vary sentence rhythm naturally. The measurement changed because the writing changed.

Why the Surrounding Sentences Matter

Early versions of this kind of tool worked on one sentence at a time, in isolation, which produced text that was locally fine and globally strange — a paragraph where sentence three no longer matched the tone of sentence two, or a reference broke because the sentence it pointed back to got rewritten out from under it.

Checking against context is the part that makes the output readable rather than just statistically different on paper. A rewrite has to hold up next to the sentence before it and the sentence after it, not only pass a check on its own. That's also a reason running the same paragraph through more than once, or over-processing something already short, tends to produce diminishing or even worse results — there's only so much natural variation to introduce before successive passes start undoing each other.
