How Does Crossplag Detect AI? What It Actually Checks

What Crossplag's AI checker looks at

Crossplag started as a plagiarism service and bolted an AI detector onto the same pipeline. When you paste text, it scores two things at once: how much matches existing sources, and how likely the writing came from a language model. The AI side outputs a single probability number, usually shown as a percentage.

Under the hood it looks for the same signals most detectors chase. Machine-written prose tends to be smooth and predictable, with low variation in sentence length and word choice. Crossplag's model was trained on large volumes of human and AI samples, and it scores new text against those patterns.

It does not read meaning or check facts. It measures statistical fingerprints — things like how often common words repeat and how 'surprising' each next word is. That is why a careful human writer can still trip it, and why heavily edited AI text can slip past.

The main signals Crossplag scores

  • Perplexity: how predictable the word choices are. Low perplexity reads as more robotic.
  • Burstiness: variation in sentence length and structure. AI tends to stay even and steady.
  • Repetition patterns: repeated transitions and filler phrases push the AI score up.
  • Vocabulary distribution: an unusually narrow or unusually broad word range raises suspicion.

One score, not a sentence map

Crossplag gives a single AI probability rather than highlighting which sentences tripped it. If you want to see exactly which lines look AI-made, you need a tool that marks text segment by segment.

How reliable is that number

Crossplag lands in the middle of the pack on accuracy. In our testing it correctly flagged clear, unedited AI writing most of the time, but it missed lightly rewritten text and occasionally flagged clean human writing. Treat its score as a rough signal, not proof.

Its false-positive rate sits around 9% on genuine human text, which is higher than the better-funded detectors. That means roughly one in eleven human samples can come back looking suspicious for no good reason.

How to read a Crossplag result without panicking

    Check the sample length

    Scores get shakier below 200 words. Short snippets are unreliable for any detector, including Crossplag.

    Look at both scores together

    If plagiarism is high and AI is low, you likely have copied human text. If AI is high and plagiarism is low, you likely have fresh model output.

    Re-run after edits

    If you rewrite dense or repetitive passages, the AI score should drop. If it does not move at all, something else may be skewing it.

    Cross-check with a second tool

    Run the same text through another detector. Two agreeing scores are more meaningful than one alone.

What throws the score off

A few things skew Crossplag's number in ways that have nothing to do with whether AI was used. Very short samples are noisy because there is not enough text to read a real pattern. Technical writing with repeated terminology can look repetitive and score high even when a person wrote it.

Quotes and citations are another trap. If you paste in large blocks of sourced material, the detector reads the whole batch together, and borrowed text can distort the final number. The cleaner fix is to scan just your own prose and handle citations separately. Read any high score in context.

Crossplag is a reasonable free-ish check, but its single-score output and middling accuracy mean it should never be the only thing you rely on.
