A Research Question Is Not a Topic
The difference between a research topic and a research question is the difference between an area you're curious about and a specific problem you intend to solve. A topic like 'remote work productivity' is too broad — it could support dozens of studies in different directions. A research question narrows that topic to something specific enough to answer: 'How does hybrid work affect collaboration quality in software development teams?'
A good research question emerges when you've read enough to see what's already known and where the gaps are. Without that background, you risk asking something that's already been answered, or asking something that's too broad to answer in a single study.
A research question should be narrow enough to answer but broad enough to matter. If you can answer it in one paragraph, it's too specific. If it would take a book to answer, it's too broad.

Quantitative vs. Qualitative Questions

Qualitative questions ask about meaning, experience, or process — 'how do people experience X?' or 'what processes shape Y?' These questions lead to studies that explore, describe, and interpret using interviews, observations, or content analysis. Mixed-methods questions combine both approaches.
The choice depends on what you actually want to know. If you want to measure whether something exists and how much, go quantitative. If you want to understand how something works or what it means to people, go qualitative. Some questions are best answered by both.

Testing Your Question Before You Commit
Before settling on a final question, run it past three tests. First, can you actually answer it given the methods and time available? If your study would need five years and a massive budget when you have six months and limited resources, the question isn't practical for this project.
Second, is the answer already out there? A thorough literature review should reveal whether someone has already addressed this. If they have, refine your question to address what's missing rather than repeating what exists.
Third, does the question actually matter? Who would care about the answer and why? A technically sound question with no practical or theoretical significance won't survive peer review or justify the investment required to answer it.
