How to Write a Literature Review Section (Not a Disguised Methods Chapter)

It's Not Your Methods Section in Disguise

Start with two or three anchor pieces — a recent review article in your field, or a paper your professor has already assigned or cited. From there, work both directions: check what those anchors cite (older, foundational work) and check what's cited them since (newer responses or pushback). This citation-chasing gets you further than typing keywords into a search box, because it follows the actual conversation instead of guessing at phrasing.
Google Scholar is a fine starting point, but don't stop there. Discipline-specific databases (JSTOR, PubMed, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore, whatever your field uses) surface work that generic search buries, and your library's database list is usually one click from the homepage. Before You Call It Done
- Does every claim in the section trace back to a specific, named source rather than a vague impression?
- Have you included at least one source that complicates or pushes back on your main narrative, not just ones that agree with each other?
- Is there an actual paragraph — not a single throwaway sentence — that names what the existing research hasn't settled?
- Are sources grouped by idea, method, or period, rather than just listed one after another in the order you found them?
- Are your newest sources recent enough for how fast the field moves?
- Does the section end by pointing directly at the gap your own paper is about to address?

A Final Read-Through
Once the draft is done, read it the way your instructor will: does it read like a map of the field, or like a list of things you happened to read?
