Edit a research paper and you're hunting for something else entirely: does the methodology actually support the results, does every claim have a citation that holds up, does the abstract still describe the paper you ended up writing after three rounds of revision? A single read-through aimed at 'making it sound better' will miss all three.

That's the core problem with treating a manuscript like any other document. Research writing carries internal dependencies — the results section has to answer the question the methods section set up, the discussion can't claim more than the data allows, and the reference list has to match the in-text citations exactly. A reviewer isn't grading your prose. They're checking whether the pieces fit together, and a fragmented edit misses gaps that a structured one catches.

The fix is to split the edit into three passes, each with a narrow job, done in a fixed order: structure first, then language and evidence, then surface-level correctness.     Read the paper for argument, not sentences. Does the methodology section stand on its own well enough that someone could replicate the study from it? Does the order of sections build logically, or did a finding from the discussion sneak into the results? This pass works best after real distance from the draft — a few days minimum, longer if the deadline allows — because you need to read it the way a stranger would, not the way you remember writing it. Try outlining the paper from memory, section by section, then compare that outline to what's actually on the page; the gaps between the two are usually the structural problems worth fixing first.

    Stage two: the line edit

    Now work sentence by sentence, but stay focused on two things: precision of claims and citation consistency. Precision means not letting 'correlated with' quietly become 'caused by' somewhere in the discussion, and not letting a single-site study generalize itself into 'these findings suggest' without a qualifier about scope. Citation consistency means checking that every claim requiring support actually has a citation attached, that the same source is referred to the same way throughout, and that terminology doesn't drift — if you call it a 'control group' on page 3, it shouldn't become a 'baseline cohort' on page 9. A useful test: read each claim in isolation and ask whether the cited source, on its own, actually says what you're using it to say.

    This is the mechanical pass: journal formatting requirements, heading levels, table numbering, and citation integrity — meaning every in-text citation has a matching reference list entry, with the right year, right author order, and right page number for direct quotes. Finish with a direct comparison of the abstract against the finished paper. Abstracts get written early and revised late, if at all, and it's common for the final results to have shifted without the summary catching up.
